Andre 3000 Says No Outkast Tour

In a recent interview, Andre revealed that hip-hop music no longer stimulates him and that he would not be touring to support their upcoming set, Speakerboxx/The Love Below.

"I don't feel the music the same way I did when I first got into hip-hop, loving it, loving writing lyrics and studying other people's lyrics," Andre told The New York Times. "Back then all I would think about was beats and rhymes."

Andre moved from Atlanta to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career and has taken up the clarinet and saxophone and is contemplating enrolling in a music school.

"The next time I perform on stage, I see myself playing in a band," Andre continued. "I want it to be a total departure from Outkast."

Andre's decision not to tour didn't effect group member Big Boi's ambitions to support the album by hitting the road.

"If he decides not to tour, it's all good," Big Boi said. "He knows I'm going to go on the road. Ain't nothing better than the crowd's reaction to new music."

wow.... i used to think andre was the coolest thing since sliced bread... and now that he wants to have a departure from outkast??? ummmm what a loser, obvioisly his new songs are pro but... he wants to play music??? buddy just stick to rapping/singing i don't care which.

Stankalicious Andre3000 surpasses his name in symbolism by allegedly maturing way past his rappin' days in just before 2000. With a son, a healthy, conscious diet, critical acclaim, and a general love of music, Andre has matured a lot in his own personal development and is seeking what I think is a more intellectually sound arena of his auditory pleasures. BUT, the guy has crazy rhymin skills and every Outkast fan out there is feenin' for just one more hit off his Stankonia. Just listen to him and Big Gipp on the "Boogie Man" track... Andre, "Pursue your happiness but share a little of what you got there!!!!"

"It's all simply a state of mind. Real sharpness comes without effort. No growth, without assistance. No action, without reaction. No desire, without restraint. Now give yourself up and find yourself again."
~ Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Maybe it can apply to Andre!

I dont think yall should be upset n shit that andre doesnt wanna tour or anything. I think its great that he want to do his own junx. Hes still the coolest ever. I mean you cant just make music for the people and dislike it yourself...u gotta like what u do. Best luck in your new life Andre. -Peace:.

P.S.
caint wait 2 see Big Bois tour

To all those sendin the negative vibe...
I think it is hard for alot of artist to see past fame and fans when that reality is so previlant in there view. I give Andre props for wanting to persue furthering himself as a musician and a person , by taking on the callenges of learning to play new instruments and being studious. Glitz and glam are just not enough for a rare and select few! He is a musical geneiuss and im sure boardom comes easy.

Posted by: Rachael on September 9, 2003 04:50 PM

I can understand why he fells this way. music has changed so much since southernplayalistic came out. With rappers oversaturating the culture with the bling, cars, hoes, and money. Some people are going to change what they feel about the music. He lost love for hiphop because the general love for it has been lost. Of course you should strive to be somebody if you want to, but there is no love for the art anymore. You can ask any rapper now why they do it and the response more than likely will be "i wanna get paid" and thats it. I give dre mad props because he isn't just trying to be a rapper. He is an ARTIST something that we are lacking.

I've been a fan of Kast since SPCM, and this was to be the year I FINALLY see them live. Now it's not happening. I hope Big Boi can convince him to go with...

Posted by: Beastie Dr on September 9, 2003 05:28 PM

Andre can't just turn his back on what made him who he is today! I mean, this is the ultimate betrayal. I hope that he changes his mind about this "departure". I wouldn't be able to promise that I'd support his career without being w/Outkast. I've always respected the relationship that Big Boi and Andre maintain, however it seems that Andre is abandoning Big Boi, which is crass..Andre, if you read this, STICK TOGETHER! WITHOUT YOU AND BIG BOI AS A TEAM, THE WORLD OF MUSIC WILL BE A COLD, FUNKLESS PLACE. OUTKAST FOREVER!!!

Posted by: Jay on September 10, 2003 06:31 AM

I've been with Kast since the beginning.....I brought their funk to my high school and got people crunked up about them back at the start with SPCFM. I was shocked to see Dre decide to part what thought would be a team that was gonna shine on bringin' the realist true dirty south hip hop ever....I mean who's gonna watch over the Dungeon, now??? I have paralleled myself with Dre, as my cousin and life long brother with Big Boi....believe it or not, I have played both the clarinet and sax for 12 years. It was kinda cool to see Dre taking up something that has brought me enjoyment for so many years. I hate to see you go bro. I'd like to see you bring some horn skills back to the Dungeon family and keep working with Big Boi as well as some of your own shit. Outkast has always been able to take their talents to another level, and I see a new improved Kast lookin' for that nexxxt level. I don't want to see the day when we speak of Outkast in the past tense.

Posted by: Coletrain on September 14, 2003 06:52 AM

ummm..just because there isn't gonna be a tour, doesn't mean that OutKast is breaking up! i'm sure Andre would still support Big Boi if he was going on tour alone and i highly doubt that he would decide to not show up..i mean he can still come on some of the tour dates, right??

Posted by: dee-* on September 16, 2003 10:12 AM

Damm ive waited soo long for this. Sounds magic already from the three tracks ive heard. They just cant put a foot wrong.

Posted by: Jaay on September 16, 2003 03:18 PM

I think dre will change his mind after this record comes out. After seeing the positive reaction to it he will be re energized and ready to go and perform for his fans. I hope so anyway. Good job on the music. Keep bringing it on.

Posted by: crapshooter on September 16, 2003 09:42 PM

Dre, come on now , no tour..? You killin me Dog. It aint to late though I know you won't dissapoint your fans and your inner passion for the crowd, I ain't given up...One more, I got your back. Imean really your style of music is really changin the industry, um wit dat Beatles, Monkey vibe.... Big Boi keep doin the damn thang , I 'll be at yo shhhh!!!

Posted by: RicJames on September 18, 2003 07:12 AM

Damgn it..they can't break up..it'd kill off hip-hop. Damgn them..

I would just like to say that no matter what happens Andre has affected my life in a very positive way. He challanged my way of thought time and time again. For that alone I stand by him with whatever direction he shall pursue. For an artist to help you see things in a different light is all you can ask of them. Has Andre ever done anything but that?

Posted by: taylorbaby on September 19, 2003 01:51 PM

Dre, and Big Boi are the sparks that light the fire of todays music, and they only add fuel to the flames. If they split, then itll be a cold future for the music industry. They really help us overstand the issues that we are all dealing with today. They definately give us a view of life from a diffrent perspective. In the "re-run" world of music, they give us something fresh to look forward to, EVERY time they bring out something new. Im not ready for this fire to die out.

I like this site because yall know the real and understand what outkast is trying to do. The othr sites that I go to people hate on dre because he changed his style. F-ck that!!! This is now maybe the greatest rap group of all time. I sure hope that when this album drops that it make these "novelty" rappers step their game up. Speakerbox/the love below is like nothing that I have ever heard. It is genius and it shows that these two dudes are way way ahead of the game and they ain't even 30 yet.

Posted by: crapshooter on September 20, 2003 12:53 PM

I dont know why the hell anyone would knock on Dre for taking a departure from hip hop. I commend him in trying out different genres and expanding on his talent. Hip hop can get tiresome, and Boi and Dre took the genre to its limit. so i cant wait for Dre's jazz album.

Posted by: The Love Above on September 22, 2003 10:48 AM

it would break my heart to see big boi and andre break. outkast has always bent hip hop to almost broke and spoke to my heart like no other hip hop artist has. hip hop will def suffer w/o these innovators. but andre is a man first and a hip hop artist second (maybe third or fourth) he has to feed his soul first then feed hip hop. i think the brotha is making a good decision by following his soul. it shows that he spits in his lyrics are real, not just jibbajabba.

Posted by: lil un on September 23, 2003 09:36 PM

for andre to say he's not gonna tour is a blow to all of us fans... i think worth going after is every person right but don't punish us for it.. i love dre and big i think they are the last of great rappers in the game.. if he decides not to return to us then so be.. but i hope not.. what is OUTKAST without DRE? just out i guess!!! damn!!!!!

SEE I UNSERSTAND YOU ANDRE AND BIG BOI. IT'S NOT LIKE THAT! PEOPLE CROSS READ JUST LET THEM SEE IF YOU READ DEEPER! HE'S SAYING HE'S GOING TO JUST CHECK OUT SOME OTHER ITEMS AND BOI IS GOING TO VENTURE INTO SOME BIGGER THINGS LIKE GETTING THAT TOUR MONEY AND DRE'S GOING TO DO SOME ACTIN HECK IF YOU MIND IS AS BIG AS THERE'S SHOOT I'LL GET TIRED OF THE PLAIN ASS HIP HOP! THEY'VE TOOK IT TO ANOTHER LEVEL. AND CHECK THIS OUT. SUNNY AND SHER! GO GET THAT MONEY TIMES TWO. DIDN'T THEY? AND NEITHER ONE IS NO BITCH GET THAT ON BROTHERS CAUSE I UNDERSTAND YA. A GOOD GROW MUST AND HAVE TO GROW AND IF YOU AIN'T GOOD ENOUGH THEN YOU GOING TO DROP.

The new album is one of the best i've heard in a long time. It has set some very high standards for all types of music, especially rap. I think Dre is making a great decision by doing his own thing, they both have the talent to do anything they want. Acting... hell it'll probably be just as good as the music so just wait before we start criticizing it.

Outkast has to be one of the greatest duos in rap music. I watched Dre metamorphisize into the individual he is today and that boy inspires me everytime I hear him spit. Although, he didn't rap to much on the love below, I peeped the way that he changes his style and the concepts of the songs that he writes. The past albums have enough lyrical depth and impact to keep me straight for a while. He changed my whole perspective on rap, well, music. Don't limit yourself to what you want to do or what other people expect you to do. I still believe that Dre and Big Boi shouldn't separate (even though they said they'll never break up on the song AQUEMINI)because they changed the game everytime they drop a new CD. Before the new album, I bought Aquemini, and forgot how DEEP them boys really was. But the milestone of that CD had to be LIBERATION. And after listening to that song over and over again, I feel that Outkast played a part in liberating my own mind. So if y'all boys actually read this shit, I appreciate what yall did. If you ever hear of Ghetto Island Records (which should be soon) HOLLA AT YA BOY!!! ON THA REAL!!!! C-ROAD!

Andre's new shit is f***ing brilliant. Instead of going with some played-out production and predictable intro-verse-obvious sample-chorus format, he's taking it to another realm. Brother's like early Prince and Brian Wilson in one.

Ok Andre inspired me to rap i love it when he raps i like it when he sings i love his side of the album i love it its new and somthing i can listin to with ya girl with outblowing speakers but i hope he doesnt depart for Outkast i hope he at leats does 1 more album him and big boi as a group like ATLiens part 2 you know somthing like that you know nu everything but who know i hope dre dont leave he wont im optimistic he wont they gone allways be together ya know

All I gotta say is they are wrong for what they did in Dallas at CLUB BLUE!! They were on the radio talked all this stuff about how they were gonna rock the house. Had a LOTTA people come out to see them ... then 15 minutes before the club closes the DJ (Greg Street - it was all his fault for misleading the crowd) announced they weren't gonna perform anything. Immean even Gipp did a couple of songs... I understand the industry politics - but when you won't even get on the stage and thank everyone for buying your album and let them feel your vibe - it comes off as arrogant. I'm almost like Fu** Kast.

The new double album is out, even in germany, where I live. And its one of the greatest, I've ever heard. The music of the two dope boys is different from anything else in the hip hop genre. But I think only as a duo, they are succesfull. When André leaves the stage and do acting in films/ movies...but when it is his new passion, Okay!!! Maybe he'll come back one time. For your future, I wish you all the best and maybe we'll see you acting next to arnold, denzel, bruce etc. and for big boi, thanks for holding on... hope your way leads you through germany!

Posted by: Grown Up With Outkast on October 8, 2003 05:04 AM

Listen to you all...Name one artist that stayed the same throughout their entire career? Outkast is by far the best hip hop group ever. More talent in one rhyme than most of these "rappers" you all vote for on TRL. If Andre wants to use his talent to expand his horizons..I support that...I will just have to start liking the clarinet. Plus...Its not like Fat Sacs cant stand on his own. Somewhere yall done gone wrong, just like a syntax error.

Posted by: Nate on October 8, 2003 08:04 AM

ok this cd is great. do what you do and a little of yourself for another if I my ask. the return of funk is the greatest thing ever. thanks for the millions of funkateers just waiting to hear something new from a old genre.

Posted by: THEREALGIRL6 on October 8, 2003 09:24 AM

Andre could make a CD of nothing but himself singing "La la la la la la la la la la la la la" for seventy minutes, and I'd buy it. In fact, if he decides to go solo, I'd buy whatever he puts out. I never liked hip hop or rap much (too misogynistic) anyway, but because they're from down the road and had ill sh*t like "Crumblin Erb" and "Skew it On the Barbie" I always made an exception for OutKast. Finally, at last, I can just enjoy OutKast (or at least, half of OutKast) without having to listen to a bunch of rap sh*t, which is cooler than cool to me, because I never cared for the genre in the first place.

So Dre, do your thang, sunshine.

Posted by: caxe on October 8, 2003 10:53 PM

I see Dre's shit as an exception to listening to hip hop all the time. it's really good music, period. I can't stand the majority of music i hear lately. I'm surrounded by hip hop, my life is hip hop. Dre has one of the few recent non hip hop albums i can really enjoy. And what about Big Boi, his shit is fresh too. I mean I'd wanna buy a blue pit from him, shit. So stop with all this "mysoginistic" bullshit and listen, fuckin herbs.

The new Kast CD absolutely defies the laws of music, just like their other albums. Can't nobody, and I mean nobody, TOUCH the lyrical/funky/stanky/soothing talent of Kast, especially Andre. Andre is on his way to self-discovery, so GET THE FUCK OFF HIS BACK!!!! This n***a is out of this world!!!! He don't give a damn about what people think. Shit, would YOU hit Erykah Badu????

Posted by: Quizzy on October 12, 2003 06:59 PM

Outkast has been my favorite group since '96, but I think its not gonna be the same without Andre on another album. I loved his new shit just like I love Cee-lo's solo album, but I think its irresponsible to let Rap die so easily when you know your one of the only great rappers left. When your the last of a dying breed, you need to let muthafuckas know how its supposed to be. I agree with everyone who said that Big Boi's shit just wasnt the same. Dont get me wrong, I aint never heard a bad verse from Big Boi, but it felt like a half a project. The same would go for Dre but he wasnt even rappin. I feel him on the state of the game, but I think hes forgeting where rap came from. It came from the hood, the same people who gave him fame and supported him. So for him to not just say he's tryin new shit, but to say hes done with rap, thats like firing your fuckin boss! I never expected someone as educated and deep as Andre 3000 to downplay and minimalize the whole artform of rap to the point of acting like its petty. Like its not worthy of his talent. Im with him all the way in his love for all music, but I definetly think he's losing touch with his roots.

On that note, "The Love Below" is a great album. I think its on the same level as a Jimi hendrix album. But I also think that it wouldnt hurt to uplift the rap game too. Do something no ones ever done. Hit the stores with a rap album at the same time as your new shit. Respect the people.

I have talk to Dre plenty of times and he is always down to earth and straight up cool people. I worked a vegetarian grocery store here in Atlanta and I saw him alot there and not once did he ever act like he was too good to have a simple conversation. He even let me go to his Toyota SUV (which was dark green) to see his child, Seven, when he was first born and he was still with ms. Badu. His music is the greatest and I and glad he is changing. It takes alot of balls in our culture as blacks, African-americans, or whatever we are being called today to do something different than we are accustomed to doing. He is to be given the utmost respect for wanting to better himself. hiphop today is nothing compared to the old days and I can see how it is beginning to lose him. people change their lifestyles and personalities everyday why can't Andre. Do your thang from that Atl, GA.

I think OutKast is one of the hottest groups to ever pick up a microphone and rock your ear drums. I don't think it's a very smart idea to want to break up the group (if those are the intentions), but you have to do what you have to do. Dre is and has been my favorite musician, rapper, artist since 99/2000 when i first got really hip to OutKast. I give him total props for wanting to do his own thing, and I think all true OutKast fans should appreciate that. True, it is a sad thing, but you can't knock a man for wanting to do something different. Change brings new things. Maybe he'll bring something back to the hip/hop scene. Just look at it as a break. But from the land of Stank, I'm outta here.

I'm with Andre 3000 100%. He's very talented. I'm glad for his album. It's a breath of fresh air. I will never stop loving rap music as long as I have Nas albums to listen to. So if Andre wants to do something else, that's his choice. Andre I know you're already gonna do this but do what you love and stay original. I have the album and my sister can't wait to get it! Posted by: Alysia on October 20, 2003 02:39 PM

I think some of you are going on emotions alone. I mean we're talking about Outkast. Not the Temptations. So what they may break up. Man I've LOVED their cuts over the years. My fav is probably Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. I hate to see these guys split myself but personally I don't think this latest CD os really all that tuff anyhow. It's OK. Nothing great to me though. If Andre isnt' feeling the music anymore then chances are he'd eventually start making music that YOU aren't feeling anymore. Given that just let him go. I don't understand statements such as he's matured past hip hop and such. What about guys like Marly Marly, Red Alert and a host of others? They're STILL in the game in some respect and are much older or mature than the oldest member of Outkast. Some people just forget where they come from at times and need to learn to stick to what they're good at. Chances are that if Andre 3000 leaves to pursue something different, that we may not hear from him again. I mean c'mon, the guy is no singer by ANY stretch of the imagination.
peace

I am an emcee myself, and i started listening to Outkast in 5th grade, and i knew it was going to evolve into something else beyond their control and i feel like the same thing is happening to me but i know that there is an underground of true emcees out there and i wont stop rhymin, but i will continue to further the art pushing the limits and crushing any wack compeditor that stands in the way!...and i encourage you all to do the same because REAL HIP HOP WILL NEVER DIE

Greetings, I am a musician. Not that that makes my view more legitimate than anyone eleses but I feel like the man needs to take whatever musical direction he sees fit as an artist. I'm not sayin i miss the Andre from Aquemini and stankonia and the other albums where he primarily flowed, but consider Miles Davis. There where many times in his career when his fans did not understand his new musical direction and critiziced him for it, but so many years later after the dust has settled hes applauded for his progressive musical thoughts and the fact that he was able to relenquish past achievements in search of something new and fresh.

Suavecat...Andre is no singer? What the hell is THAT supposed to mean? He can hold a note, can't he?

I think some of you hip hop heads need to grow up and stop acting so selfish towards your rap soldiers...yes the hip hop culture includes the art of rhyming but it also includes other things, INCLUDING singing...

and Andre is a WONDERFUL singer...he has a very unique voice...

I never heard of Outkast until Hey Ya when I was home sick. I really don't do videos as I am older. I love the Hey Ya video. I feel as though Dre should continue his dream in musical instruments and/or movies, but he's great - his video was not raunchy or nasty and it's number 1. He seems to be a role model for his age group and should continue doing it the clean way that he did it in Hey Ya. Personally, I'm old enough to be his mother - but I found the video relaxing. Dre - go for your dreams, but continue showing the young crowd that videos can be done clean

I think that it is best for Andre to want to grow with his music. There is more to music than just rapping/singing. It is ignorant to not want to progress. Progression is what makes good music.

disappointed but nevertheless, one of the reasons Andre is so badass is because he does what he feels. the music is there to prove it. my faith in current music is restored thanks to him and Big Boi. can't wait to see what is next for our enjoyment. i'm sure it will be fantastick'ly spectakula, my good man.

I'm so into the arts and an aspiring actress in theatre and musician so I can relate. To me, there is nothing better than being on stage..it may seem like it's the coolest thing to be a star but I can see how it gets old. I'm fickle so maybe that's why I relate so well. But you get the same rush when your playing beautiful music with a band that you get when your on stage performing as a artist....the same energy!! Life is too short to stick to one thing as long as you don't lose yourself. I was hoping Dre would be able to pursue his goals in acting....he is a free spirited person and that's what acting takes. GO DRE'!!!!!!! Now all I need is his connects to get into PR!!! :)

Damb! Andre was the coolest thing ever. thats cool he wants to start playing saxaphone and other music, but he should still stay with outkast. why can't he do both? Andre doesnt know how many people who love him and outkast he is letting down! that includes me! I think he should sing and play music for outkast. It also sucks that he aint touring with Outkast. He should at least finish the season if you know what i mean. I hope Andre reeds this. For ever i wll liste to Outkast! Big Boi wil do great but it wont be the same with out Andre.

andre 3000 has tapped into the same energy that Prince tapped into when people hated on him, esp. from Parade to Sign of the Times to the Black Album and all the bootleg recordings during that time period...it's not for the feeble minded, so if you don't get it, don't worry...it's just not for you. don't be afraid of experimenting with different types of music. you aren't betraying yourself or your people; you're only expanding your horizons.

andre, keep doin' it...i support this development! i see this album as a big metaphor...he knows what he's onto, and it's something major.

i can understand all sides. however i think what it really comes down to is the individual. you've got to be happy with yourself before you can make others happy and i think that is what dre is doing. i mean, i can't see them on tour, but i have seen them on several shows like mtv's trl and saturday night live (snl). artists are different kinds of people and they have to go where ever the spirit moves 'em. outkast is forever, they've just got it like that. as their fans we just gotta trust and know that no matter what, it's cool. everythings alright. it's up to the both of them to keep hittin' us hard with that hot shit! i love you outkast, i love you dre!

Posted by: Malinda :) on November 3, 2003 02:18 AM

umm...outkast is the sickest illest rap/hip hop group out there and if 3000 wants to leave i think he should re-think what hes doin, outkast made him who he is
peace

Honestly, dude is mad talented and whatever he decides to do will be bangin'. I feel that in order to be on top, you need growth. All he wants now is something different to keep he's interest poppin. It's good to try something new because you learn more about your art and change is always a positive thing, so I support dude in all that he do. Keep 'em guessing, Dre.

Andre, do your thang, my bruthah! We, true hip hop fans, will continue to support you. Human beings evolve! We are not to remain stagnant. We will not allow hip hop to be given one definition.

shit va tråkigt att dom inte ska turnera.. de hade varit fett som fan.. men men så e d ibland..

Posted by: Stffn on November 8, 2003 07:20 AM

I give all the credit in the world to Andre. Do something with your life, explore new outlets. Music is a disease that infects, always strive to pursue and experience all possible. Don't set limits but instead goals and aspirations out of the box, not the same shit that everyone labels appropriate.
